For Undergraduates
A world of possibilities
From Logging to Mapping
In geology fieldwork is where classroom theory becomes true understanding. Fieldwork is where you learn to do geology rather than just know facts, figures and principles. However, the time for fieldwork is limited and for many participation is difficult. Geology-Verse allows undergraduate students to step into fieldwork whenever they like – even over a few spare hours in the evening.
There are many activities that we geologists do which can be replicated in a virtual world. We can make observations of tectonic structures, igneous intrusions, and sedimentary sequences and structures. Many of the interpretations we make in the field can be made by inspecting 3D models of outcrops set within the landscape. Geology-Verse provides the opportunity to self-learn field geology and to practice your skills in observation and interpretation.
Our first locality is Inchnadamph in Assynt, Scotland. Located on the Moine Thrust Belt. It provides a challenging mapping area with numerous complex structures. Geology-Verse provides you with an introduction to the mappable units and a tutorial on mapping techniques to get you started. Can you map the Moine Thrust? Time to find-out. See more about the Inchnadamph area in our localities section.
Future localities will focus on different aspects of Earth Science, such as the stratigraphy of volcanic sequences, poly-phase deformation, or syntectonic sedimentation in mountain belts. Each will examine one or more outcrops at different ranges of resolution and complete with visual explanations of important processes.
